Makeup essentials for everywoman. Plus tips from an expert and your cosmetics resource guide

Every woman starts her day by looking into the mirror, trying to decide just what she can do to hide those dark circles and brighten up those eyes. A million thoughts run through her mind. “Gloss or lipstick? Kajal? Hmmm… but blue or black? Should I try on that electric blue eye-shadow I bought?!”

Hang on, ladies! Before you get mascara-happy, stop and think! Your makeup has to suit your clothes, the time of the day, your age, skin tone, and of course, the occasion. Luckily for you, we at What’s Up Bangalore have mulled over the matter with the experts. So get ready to whip out those glosses and liners, because it’s show time

Undercover
For starters, remember that there’s only so much that makeup can camouflage. The secret to a well-groomed woman is beautiful skin. Use products that suit your skin type and be consistent, because miracles don’t happen overnight. Reminder: makeup enhances, not creates.

That everyday routine
Happening college girl: You’re just starting out, so less is more. Keeping your skin healthy is very important at this stage of life. Start with a moisturiser, preferably with a decent SPF count (30 should do). An everyday kajal and a light lip gloss are a must. Save your liners and eye shadows for parties. The smoky eye look is stylish and young, so try it out for a special occasion.

Suave working woman: You want to look professional and composed. A regular makeup routine is necessary, so don’t play around with too much colour. To keep yourself from looking too school-girlish, apply a light blush to your cheeks. Your eye makeup and lipstick should reflect a proficient office-goer, not a party animal. Lighter hues are safer, but don’t be afraid to go with the occasional bright red or hot pink.

Expert Speak
Bangalore-based makeup artist Zarina Nissar has been in the business for 20 years. She’s worked with the who’s who of the fashion world and is much in demand with brides in the city who want to look flawless on their special day. From her cosy makeover studio nestled in the by-lanes of Vasanthnagar, Zarina offers WUB readers a few insider tips on what it takes to be a well made-up woman:

I swear by kajal. Find yourself a good, water-proof, non-smudge kajal. Indian women have beautiful eyes so highlight them..

Be consistent. Keep your skin clean and healthy all the time with a regular routine. Don’t start only when you have an acne problem.

Know your skin. Find the right products for your skin type and stick with them. Don’t use something just because your best friend does.

5 must-haves in a woman’s hand-bag:
Sunblock
Face spray (filled with rosewater, to keep you fresh!)
Kajal
Lip gloss
Moisturiser

Stay-at-home mum: You’re not restricted by formalwear and can experiment with colour and style. Once again, start with a sunblock that has an instant glow moisturiser. Touch up with a warm blush and light eye shadow. You don’t need to go down the primer foundation route unless it’s a huge occasion, so play around with your eyes. A dark mascara for long lashes and a little kajal. Apply a thin line of kajal under your upper lid as well since the illusion of length works from the base of your lashes, not the tips.

Night versus Day
The position of the sun in the sky has a great deal to do with makeup choices. During the day, stick with makeup that’s subtle and leaves you looking natural in the sunlight. Nothing is worse than a heavily made-up face, caked with unnecessary foundation that’s melting away and dark, painted eyes. Soft blush and tinted lipstick will suffice.
The night calls for darker shades and shimmery powders that look good in the moonlight. Blend two shades carefully with your eye shadow for a gradient effect. For your lips, bring out those deep plums and sassy reds that you’ve been hiding at the back of your drawer.

Cleaning Up
After a long day of looking gorgeous, the first thing you need to do when you get home is to remove your makeup. Never, ever, sleep with makeup on. Settle for a good brand because you don’t want to take chances with a cheaper substitute that could irritate your skin. Start with your eyes and then gently wipe off any blush or foundation. Steam your pores to make it easier to remove makeup. After wiping, wash with face wash. Astringent is a good idea for oily skin, and a little moisturizer or rosewater leaves you feeling fresh.
