Grilling and barbecuing in India is still a novel concept. While the world over, barbecuing is associated with the warm summer months, the BBQ story in India is a bit different. Considering the country reels under scorching temperatures through the summer, barbecuing has been reserved for the cooler months, which happen to be just round the corner in Bangalore! The joys of barbecuing are two-fold: enjoying the outdoors and cooking up a meal with the whole family pitching in.

A good place to get those barbie juices flowing is the Weber Experience Centre on Ulsoor Lake Road, set up by the brand Weber Grills, a pioneer in the field. This is no showroom, and as the name suggests, it’s a place where you can wander around and experience the possibilities of grilling in your own backyard or even in apartment balcony. There’s a huge range of grills with multiple choices in terms of size, fuel etc. as well as a host of accessories, fuel and smoking choices. The centre also organises grilling sessions, usually with an acclaimed chef taking participants through the basics. At the end of it, you will be in a position to figure out what suits you best. Armed with this know-how, you can check out the various products available in the market.

It is common perception that grilling is tedious and time-consuming, but that myth will quickly fade as you begin experimenting. In fact, it will come as a pleasant surprise that a variety of dishes – both vegetarian and non-vegetarian – can be cooked easily on the grill. Besides which, grilling gives the dish a smoky, rustic flavor, which is really quite delicious and unique.

Keep in mind that grilling is only limited by how creative you can get. There are a gazillion marinating techniques and marinades – you can keep it simple, with just a coat of oil and a minimal use of spices and/or herbs, or go the whole hog, using a variety of ingredients. Also, remember to acquire recipes that specify the methods and the time that the food needs to cook on the grill, as these could vary for red meats, white meats, seafood and vegetables. Ultimately, just enjoy the experience!
